Our work speaks for itself.Emergencies happen. We’re prepared. Here is how.
Weather
We keep a close eye on the weather, from storms to extreme heat. In the DMV, we experience all the seasons and take into account what each day brings.
In the Summer months, we do not take dogs out longer than a few minutes, especially senior dogs or young dogs or dogs bred for the cold. This also protects our team from heat exhaustion. We will opt for indoor enrichment. If you do not have access to a grassy area, we will require your dog have to paw protection.
During the Winter, we require pups to have paw protection from the salt and ice. Dogs will very short fur or hairless dogs should be supplied a sweater or coat.
During stormy weather, we will be closed for enrichment visits and walks.
For tornados, the team is trained to go to windowless room, usually the lowest level bathroom, with the dog. Tornados aren’t a major threat, but as climate change continues, more tornados start to touch down in our home.
Each team member is equipped with easy to use leashes, usually a slip lead, to quickly get onto the dog during emergencies where the dog must and human must leave, such as a fire or flood incident. Each team member is trained to call the appropriate authorities, then the manager on duty, who will then reach out right away to the client as the team member handles the situation.
Medical
While we are professionals, none of us are certified vets unless otherwise stated. But, we do have plans in place.
All of our team members undergo CPR training for dogs and cats. This training is provided via online courses at RECOVERInitiative. When local workshops are available, Jimmy’s Park team members will go to become certified.
Dogs experiencing dark blood in their stool, pale gums, lethargy, fatigue, and/or constant vomiting are immediately brought to the closest Emergency Vet. The emergency vets we like to use in the DMV are VEG or Friendship. You will be contacted by your specialist for updates. You will be responsible for the vet bills.
If your companion is bit, we take the biting dog’s information to ensure they’re vaccinated. If we can’t get confirmation, we will take your dog to the ER vet. If your dog bites one of our specialists, the session ends and depending on the level of the bite, medical attention may be required. Our insurance covers this. If this happens during a sit, your emergency contact will contacted to take over if no one else is available to care for your companion for the safety of our team and your companion. Dog bites are taken seriously, and even the smallest bites are documented. While our speciality involves reactive dogs, if your dog has a multiple bite history with us, we may not be able to continue care.
If your dog is injured during play time, we will assess and take to the emergency vet. While we offer tons of enrichment, rough housing isn’t a normal one we do, but anything is possible so we stay prepared.
